This MHFA Essentials course focuses on core knowledge and practical skills.  You will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Mental Health Commission of Canada. This is a streamlined one-day course that is designed to be accessible and applicable across many settings, offering a strong foundation in MHFA principles without formal assessment or certification—making it an ideal option for individuals, teams, or communities seeking meaningful, time-efficient training.

Through the course, participants will:

  • Increase Mental Health Awareness
  • Understand stigma, diagnostic labeling, and barriers to helping
  • Learn how to use the ALGES framework to support
  • Learn effective communication techniques
  • Learn reflective self-awareness
  • Review mental health support resource mapping
  • Delivery Format: The course is fully facilitated via Zoom platform
  • Course Length: 6 hours of instruction

YOUR FACILITATOR:

Charlene Crews (she /her) is an experienced mental health clinician licensed by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Law Society of Ontario. With over 30 years of experience supporting marginalized populations across mental health, addictions, health care, forensics/correctional, homelessness and social housing, she brings a deep, multidisciplinary perspective to her work. Charlene’s background spans individual and family therapy, case management, research coordination, education and psychiatric advocacy in government and community settings. She is committed to creating an engaging learning environment grounded in open dialogue and practical skills you can confidently apply as a mental health first aider. Charlene joins us from Ontario.
