Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Essentials Training
The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Essentials course is an official, one-day (6-hour), in-person training program designed to build the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to recognize and respond to individuals experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health or substance use crisis. Participants learn how to provide initial support until appropriate professional help or other supports become available.
This engaging, facilitator-led course combines interactive discussions, real-world scenarios, and applied learning activities to develop practical helping skills that can be applied in workplaces, community settings, and everyday life. Participants gain a strong foundation in Mental Health First Aid principles and develop the confidence to respond effectively and compassionately when someone may be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.
Participants Will Learn To:
- Increase awareness and understanding of mental health and substance use challenges.
- Recognize the impact of stigma, diagnostic labelling, and barriers to seeking or offering help.
- Apply the evidence-based ALGES action plan:
- Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis.
- Listen and communicate non-judgmentally.
- Give reassurance and information.
- Encourage professional and other supports.
- Support self-care for both the person and yourself.
- Develop effective communication and active listening skills.
- Strengthen reflective self-awareness and confidence when supporting others.
- Identify appropriate mental health resources and pathways to support.
